At the beginning of the 18th century in Mexico, Spanish colonists invented a carved wooden molinillo for drinks in which obtaining thick foam was important.
These include traditional Mexican spiced hot chocolate, atole (a corn drink), and champurrado, a popular version of atole with chocolate and milk.
