Today I want to offer you an unusual option for preparing a simple and familiar dish from childhood - rice porridge. Let's make Belgian rice porridge!
Tasty and healthy rice porridge is not just a breakfast option for the Belgians, it is a national dessert with its own traditions and cooking secrets.
Belgian rice porridge is tender, sweet, always cooked with milk and with the addition of spicy spices. However, its main highlight is the final touch, which gives the dish a unique national flavor - a “crust” of cane sugar on the surface. Cane sugar is scattered over the surface of hot rice porridge just before serving. The heat melts and melts the sugar, the syrup permeates the porridge, giving it the aroma and taste of caramel. It seems like a minor addition, but it turns out unusual and very tasty! Try it!

Round rice – 125 g
Milk – 700 ml
White refined sugar – 60 g
Cinnamon – 1 stick
Vanilla - to taste
Saffron – 1 pinch
Brown cane sugar – 2-3 tbsp. (taste)

1. Rinse and dry the rice.
2. Bring the milk to a boil. Add rice and regular refined sugar.
3. Add spices: cinnamon stick and vanilla.
4. Bring the mixture to a boil over moderate heat. Reduce heat to low, cover the pan and cook the rice for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally. Or place the mixture in a multicooker bowl and cook in the “rice porridge” mode - this way your participation in the process will be minimal.
5. When the porridge is ready, add a pinch of saffron (optional). Stir the porridge several times and turn off the heat.
6. Sprinkle a serving of hot porridge with cane sugar.
7. Wait a few seconds for the sugar to melt and you are ready to start dessert. Belgian rice porridge is ready! Bon appetit!
